FOUR CAPE REGION RUNNERS PARTICIPATED in their first-ever triathlon Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Dewey Beach Triathlon. They include (l-r) Dan Matta 75th, Chip Thompson 14th, Chris Schell 54th and Tim Green 20th. They trained with tricoach and professional triathlete Kevin Danahy to get ready for the race.
The annual Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon was held Saturday morning, Sept. 19, with the course set up for a half- mile swim, a 7.2- mile bike ride and a 3.1- mile 5K run.
Nearly 1,000 racers in the male, female and team categories took part in the event.
Feedback I have received during the week was that the swim was rough and could have gone either way as to whether or not to have it.
Race Director Ava Cannon made the call to hold the swim and most made it through safely, while many others had to be rescued from the surf by the working lifeguards.
Cannon, a former triathlete herself, was one of the top in the sport in her early competitive years and knows the sport very well.
The Dewey Beach Triathlon benefits the YMCA Kids Campaign and has become one of the most popular first- time triathlons on the East Coast.
